About San Francisco Airport

San Francisco Airport is an international airport also known as SFO. It is located 21 kilometres south of downtown San Francisco, nearby Millbrae in San Mateo County. It is the biggest airport in all of Northern California and the busiest in the state, second to Los Angeles International Airport. It operates flights to and from all parts of North America, and is a primary portal to Europe and Asia. SFO ranked 7th and 15th busiest airport in the United States and in the world, respectively, by passenger count in 2014. SFO is North America’s biggest international terminal.

On May 7, 1927, the 61 hectares of cow pasture opened as an airport where SFO now stands. It was called Mills Field Municipal Airport up to 1931 when it was renamed to San Francisco Municipal Airport and was called “International” in 1955. In March 1959, TWA introduced Boeing 707-131 jetliners that fly nonstop to New York, starting the jet age for SFO. But it was only on October 4, 2007 that a jumbo jet, Airbus A380, made its first landing in the airport. The international terminal houses the medical clinic situated beside Boarding Area A’ s security screening area. SFO’s new traffic control tower will reach building completion in 2016.

The Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum is housed in San Francisco Airport. It was among the first few airports to commence the use of a Fly Quiet Program. It’s also the first US airport to merge its in-line baggage screening to its baggage-handling system. This served as a model for most airports during the post-9/11 era. SFO is the world’s biggest building built on base isolators that protect against earthquakes. In 2004, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas features SFO as Easter Bay International Airport. It also appeared as Honolulu International Airport in Godzilla on 2014.
