Liverpool Airport or Liverpool John Lennon Airport can be found in Speke, Liverpool. It’s an international airport that serves North West England, including North Wales, Shropshire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Liverpool. It was named after one of the members of The Beatles, John Lennon. The airport started to operate in 1930 offering scheduled flights by Imperial Airways. The official opening happened in 1933. In the late 30’s, the number of passengers started to go up, especially those that needed to cross the Irish Sea. Due to this demand, a couple of hangars, control tower, as well as a passenger terminal were made. The Royal Air Force took control of the airport during World War II.

Various planes were also assembled in the airport by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation like the Mustang fighters and Hudsons. This was also were what considered to be the quickest battle happened during the Battle of Britain. Flight Lieutenant Denys Gillam took down Junkers 88 while flying his Hawker Hurricane. Artist Robert Taylor captured the moment through his painting entitled the Fastest Victory. There was a steady increase on the number of passengers from 1945 to 1948. From 50,000 it went up to 75,000. In 1986, a new passenger terminal was opened and the original terminal was converted into a hotel now known as the Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel. Flights covering North Africa and Europe, as well as connecting flights to other countries are available. Some of the airlines that serve the airport are Blue Air, Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Prior to being named as Liverpool John Lennon Airport, it was originally called Speke Airport. It was in 2001 that it was changed to its current name. This was 21 years after John Lennon died. Moreover, it’s the first airport in UK to be named after a person.

Unlike other airports, it only has one terminal that can hold over 5.5 million passengers and take them to more than 60 destinations per year.
