About Newcastle Airport

Newcastle Airport was known as Woolsington Aerodrome when it was opened on July 26, 1935. It was officially opened by Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, the Secretary of State for Air. The amount to build the airport cost £35,000. It’s located in Woolsington, Newcastle upon Tyne and serves Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Cumbria, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. AMP Capital has 49% share of the airport, while Newcastle Airport Local Authority Holding Company Ltd has 51% share. The latter also operates the airport. Newcastle Airport was ranked 10 among the busiest airports in 2013. It used to be located in Cramlington in Northumberland. However, after Word War II, the location was moved to its present site.

The number of passengers at the airport had a huge increase in the 1960’s. This was due to the holidays taken by British locals in other countries like Spain, instead of spending their vacation around United Kingdom. Due to the said growth, a new traffic controller, apron and runway were built to serve the passengers better. The number of passengers reached over one million per year in 1970’s, which is why its status was changed to a regional international airport and was named Newcastle Airport. The Airport Metro station was opened in 1991 to connect the city center of New Castle to the airport. Go, which is a low cost airline also started serving the passengers in 2001. Some of the passenger airlines that serve the airport are Aer Lingus Regional, Eastern Airways and Emirates.

Newcastle Airport has the new Aspire Lounge, which all passengers can take advantage of. AspirePlus lounge, which is an upgrade for the regular lounge service is also available for a better experience. It has a quiet zone, which is perfect if you wish to spend a relaxing time while waiting for your next flight.

The airport also has an academy that offers trainings on security, first aid, firefighting and aviation. The trainings are conducted by instructors who are highly experienced in this field.
